The Floyd County Courts conduct business on Monday thru Friday from 8:00 a.m. until noon and from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. (excluding holidays).

Juror Exemption or Deferral Form

Personal information about you that is contained in your written responses to the Juror Questionnaire Form will not be released to persons other than the parties and their counsel. Your questionnaire forms will remain confidential, consistent with their intended use and consistent with the constitutional and statutory rights of the parties.

The Courts start new juries each week. You will be advised of the length of the trial by the Judge when you are sent to Court for jury selection.

To find out if you need to report for Jury Duty, please call (812) 981-2761 beginning Friday evening after 4:30 p.m., for reporting dates starting the next week. A recording will announce what groups are required to report and when, have your juror number available. You may also view Jury Duty information by clicking on this link.
Important Note: Jury selection is occasionally canceled after jurors are notified on Friday. While rare, you should double-check the websites or phone message system Sunday night just in case this occurs.

Requesting a Deferral may help if you have a conflict or a hardship on the date you have been asked to appear. This would continue your date until the next available date. You MUST contact the Jury Office as soon as possible at 812-981-2761 or email Carrie Young at [email protected]. Failure to timely notify the office may result in contempt of court proceedings before the presiding judge.

Occasionally due to snow storms or other reasons, The Court will delay opening of the building, postpone to a different day, or cancel jury service. We will send text and email messages to you if you agreed to use these two methods. The phone message system and website will be updated with the same information.

Parking for all jurors is available near the Courthouse and alongside streets, however, parking is limited. A public parking facility is located at the northwest corner of State and Market streets. There is a charge for use of this facility which cannot be paid or reimbursed by the Courts, however the third floor and up is FREE. Public transportation is available in New Albany. The courthouse doors open at 8:00AM. Allow sufficient time to walk from the parking lot/garage and proceed through the security station. Screening includes a walk-through magnetometer for yourself and X-ray machine for bags. Cell phones and pagers are not permitted in the courtroom. Weapons are not permitted in the courthouse.

Bring your summons paper and photo identification. Staff members will direct you through the check-in process and then to your assigned seat. You may have to fill out a second, more in-depth questionnaire depending on the nature of the trial scheduled.

Jury selection can take several hours depending on the nature of the trial. You may bring reading material. Be prepared to sit for several hours while the judge and attorneys prepare for jury selection and then begin the questioning process to select the jury members. It is possible, but not likely, that jury selection will last through normal lunch time.

Dress appropriately for being in a Courtroom. Business attire is appropriate, as is casual business attire. Do not report in muscle shirts, shorts, sandals, or in any attire which would be inappropriate for a Courtroom.

The law allows the use of many different sources. In Floyd County, data is used from Indiana driver’s licenses and the Indiana Internal Revenue Service.

To qualify for Jury Service you must be:

  • A citizen of the United States
  • Over the age of 18
  • A resident of Floyd County
  • Able to read, write, speak, and understand the English language

You may be disqulaified if:
  • You have a physical or mental disability that would interfer with service
  • You are under a sentence imposed for an offense
  • You have served as a juror in Floyd County in the past year
  • You are under a guardianship due to a mental incapacity
  • You are currently serving on active duty in the military
  • Any other reason which you would like to be excused from jury duty will be addressed by the Judge the day you appear for jury selection

Because of the random selection process, some names are selected every year or so, and some never are.

Staff will give you a proof of service when your day is concluded. Your pay stub will contain a record of your payment.

If you are selected and serve as a juror, all of your necessary meals will be provided by the Court at no cost to you. If you have special dietary needs, please advise the Bailiff at your earliest opportunity.

Floyd County provides compensation for jurors for their service. Currently, the rate for jury service is $15.00 per day (or any portion thereof) as a prospective juror, and if you are selected, the rate of compensation is $40.00 per day (or any portion thereof). Mileage is paid at 0.38 cents per mile.

You will be mailed a check for your jury service once your service is complete.

Businesses are not required to pay you for jury service. However, many pay their employees for performing this civic duty. You should contact your Human Resources Office for guidance.

Employers are prohibited from discharging you from your job due to jury duty. However, certain provisions apply for smaller employers. You should contact your Human Resources Office for guidance. The Jury Office can explain the provisions further. Employers who violate these statutory protections are subject to summary violations and fines.

In Floyd County, Grand Juries are convened to determine whether or not sufficient facts and evidence exist to file charges. Petit Juries are convened to decide questions of fact in civil and criminal cases and to reach decisions in conjunction with those findings. These juries consist of 6 to 12 person plus alternates.

When you enter the building, you will be required to go through a magnetometer. All briefcases, purses, and packages will be X-rayed by security.

  • Work tools
  • Cameras
  • Video recorders
  • Audio recorders
  • Laptops
Cell phones MUST be turned off at all times when in the courtroom.

There are no childcare service available at the Floyd County Courthouse. Please make arrangements to have your child(ren) cared for. Do NOT bring them with you for service.
